چکیده

The band structure of graphene near the Fermi surface is often well described by the effective mass approximation. In this approach electron wave function obeys the Diractype equation. To describe a number of effects it is necessary to supplement the equation with boundary conditions. Using the Hermiticity and the time reversal symmetry we derive the phenomenological boundary conditions for a multicomponent effective wave function. The boundary conditions in the case of smooth crystalline potential near the edge are parameterized in terms of a real phenomenological constant that describes a general type edge. The edge states spectra (i.e. Tamm states spectra) for semi-infinite graphene are analyzed.

Dissipative quantum hall effect in graphene near the Dirac point.

We report on the unusual nature of the nu=0 state in the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) in graphene and show that electron transport in this regime is dominated by counterpropagating edge states. Such states, intrinsic to massless Dirac quasiparticles, manifest themselves in a large longitudinal resistivity rho(xx) > or approximately h/e(2), in striking contrast to rho(xx) behavior in the st...

Electronic structure of triangular , hexagonal and round graphene flakes near the Fermi level

The electronic shell structure of triangular, hexagonal and round graphene quantum dots (flakes) near the Fermi level has been studied using a tight-binding method. The results show that close to the Fermi level the shell structure of a triangular flake is that of free massless particles, and that triangles with an armchair edge show an additional sequence of levels (“ghost states”). These leve...

Unique nature of the lowest Landau level in finite graphene samples with zigzag edges: Dirac electrons with mixed bulk-edge character

Dirac electrons in finite graphene samples with zigzag edges under high magnetic fields (in the regime of Landau-level formation) are investigated with regard to their bulk-type and edge-type character. We employ tight-binding calculations on finite graphene flakes (with various shapes) to determine the sublattice components of the electron density in conjunction with analytic expressions (via ...

Spatially resolved edge currents and guided-wave electronic states in graphene

Exploiting the light-likeproperties of carriers ingraphene could allow extreme non-classical forms of electronic transport to be realized1–8. In this vein, finding ways to confine and direct electronic waves through nanoscale streams and streamlets, unimpeded by the presence of other carriers, has remained a grand challenge9–12. Inspired by guiding of light in fibre optics, here we demonstrate ...

Electron energy loss spectrum of graphane from first-principles calculations.

In this study, the energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) of carbon atoms in chair and tricycle conformers of hydrogenated graphene, namely 'graphane', has been calculated in the density functional theory using FP-LAPW method, and then, it has been compared with that of graphite and graphene. Using ELNES from chair conformer, the carbon K-edge was found to have a few main features including el...
